The Internet of Things (IoT)
According to a report by Gartner there will be 30% increase in the number of connected devices in 2016 as compared to 2015 with 6.4 billion IoT devices entering the realm of internet of things. The number is further expected to increase to 26 billion by 2020.
"BY 2020 IT IS EXPECTED THAT 26 BILLION DEVICES WILL BE PART OF INTERNET OF THINGS"
How is IoT starting to impact your organisations
The explosion in the use of Smart phones revolutionised the way we communicate, work and organise our personal lives. Digital Apps now dominate how we work and Cloud technologies are transforming agility and speed to market of products and services.
Smart devices (IoT) have become a natural progression to this. For example Intelligent Buildings, (controlling water, electricity and access control are becoming common). Smart fridges and control systems in industry and manufacturing and even smart cars and watches are already here.
IoT will soon encroach on every aspect of our lives, but there are frightening end of possibilities for Cyber Criminals to take control of such devices to steal data, monitor our environments or gain access to other secure systems.
Why is IoT Security so important?
An organisation is only as strong as their weakest link and there is real concern that IoT devices are a real risk to an organisation as the “weakest link” We live in a “connected world” the lines between how organisations interconnect have blurred.
Without a robust plan and strategy for organisations to protect themselves from such cyber threats, the risks are high.
In 2015 we saw baby monitors being hacked into, so Cyber Criminals could see into people’s properties.
In another development it was proven that internet connected cars can be compromised. A number of high profile recall of cars have already happened in the US after it was proved doors could be unlocked, shutting down the car in motion or taking control of the entertainment system.
